Pokemon Go: 12 ways it can help in your job search
For the uninitiated,
Pokemon Go is a massively popular mobile game released last month, that needs
you to go outside and capture, battle and train Pokemon (virtual creatures aka
Pocket Monsters) using your cell camera and GPS.
But hey, if you didn't
know that despite the media tsunami, you have probably been hiding in a cave
and have tuned out of the professional world too.
Your incuriosity might
kill you when massive fast-moving technological changes hit your career or
workplace. Instead of losing out, stay on top of your environment to score a
career win.
Here are some lessons from
Pokemon Go to get ahead in your career.
Pokemon are only found
outdoors. So you need to get up and step outside.
You also need to walk 2
km/5km/10 km to hatch eggs and advance in the game. Similarly, your new job
will never work out if you only sit at home and restrict your efforts to the
internet or social media.
Get out there in the real
world where the jobs are, put in those miles daily to go and meet people at
their workplaces.
The more you do so, the
higher the likelihood of finding Pokemon (potential opportunities for you).
Do you enjoy hunting the
rare Articunos or Moltres or prefer to focus on training your Jigglypuff and
Swagger or simply want to stock up Pokedex by capturing as many Pokemon you
can?
Go ahead and enjoy your
particular style of play. Similarly, when looking for a job, figure out what
you really want from your career.
It does not matter what is
conventional, what others are choosing or what is currently hot.
Identify your preferred
geography, lifestyle, industry, function and the kind of role you would enjoy.
Focus on your preferences
and you are likely to land the right job faster.
PokeStops are places where
you go to collect and replenish eggs, Poke Balls and other items.
Once done, you cannot
collect again until it refreshes up in a few minutes. Similarly, to find jobs,
go to where the jobs are. Figure out which companies or sectors are hiring and
meet professionals there.
Be willing to travel to
places where there are jobs that you seek, for example finance professionals to
Mumbai.
If there are no jobs
available, come back again later to check if the PokeStop has refreshed and
opportunities have emerged.
Each Pokemon has Combat
Power (CP) on capture which indicates how well they will perform in battle,
Note, that even two Pikachu captured at the same time may not have the same CP.
However, you can improve
CP by enhancing your XP experience gained through completing tasks). Similarly,
improve your hirability visa-vis your competition by increasing your experience
by working on multiple projects, internships and assignments.
As you successfully
demonstrate multiple competencies and achievements, your employability
increases and your job search is easier.
Strangers playing Pokemon
often chat up at a PokeStop and share tips and information and then team up at
Gyms to battle opponents.
In your job search, reach
out to professionals.
Don't be shy in seeking
information on jobs, asking to get connected to people who could help you and
for pointers on what you could do better.
At the same time give back
by sharing your ideas and knowledge with them. Pokemon just gave networking a
good name!
Like you train your
Pokemon at the Gym to sharpen their skills and get them battle ready, you too
need to train up at school to get the right certifications to be job ready.
However, entering a Gym
requires you to be at level 5. Much like the real world, where you need to
clear all the preliminary levels first before you can qualify for the coveted
training/education which will get you the best jobs and salaries.
Without strengthening up
at the Gym, your Pokemon will not win against stronger peers in job search.
Activating an incense in
the game releases a mysterious fragrance that attracts Pokemon to you for 30
minutes.
It thus makes sense to
invest your time to build your incense through a CV that highlights your
achievements and transferable skills.
Also, craft your resume
separately for each opportunity to keep your incense relevant. Magnify your
incense by maintaining an updated social media and LinkedIn presence.
Finally, prepare hard for
your interviews to demonstrate your knowledge and abilities in the best manner.
Imagine throwing all 60
Pokeballs at a Sigilyph only to have it elude you.
Similarly, your only
resource is time. Do not invest it chasing only one opportunity that may not
work out for you. Even if a recruiter has indicated that you are likely to get
the job, keep working on other openings while you await results.
If you are rejected,
quickly shift focus to your other balls in play. At the same time, don't try to
"catch 'em all".
You will never have enough
bandwidth to chase every opportunity.
Go after ones you really
want. You just need to catch only the right one!
Your colleagues are
firebreathing Charizards and you are a pathetic Magikarp?
Never mind, at level 20, a
Magikarp evolves into the stone crushing Gyarados.
Put in hours of practice
to pick up skills required to evolve into an expert in your role.
When
you spot a Charizard, you run after it and hit it with everything you have got
including valuable ultra balls.
If
there is an opening or promotion you covet, work towards it.
Prove
yourself through multiple initiatives and staff yourself on challenging
projects to maximise your skills.
While
waiting for Charizard, do not put your phone on prolonged idle to save battery.
You
never know which other Pokemon might turn up. Do not sit idle for the perfect
opportunity.
Snap
up on other good ones. Collect enough Chamanders and evolve into a Charizard.
When
you put a Lure at a PokeStop, it attracts Pokemon for 30 minutes and all
players nearby benefit.
Learn
to co-operate, share your skills and team up at the workplace to complete your
own and everyone else's goals much faster than going it alone.
